First rule of buzz marketing: Make sure your story is worthy of telling.
Early on, I wrote about the 6 buttons you can press to get people talking about your business. In hindsight, I really should have shared this presentation with you first to create a stronger context and better frame of reference for you. Sorry about that… let’s fix it now.
The presentation below also provides several real life examples of marketing you are likely to recognize. You might be tempted to discount the examples as not being relevant to you if you are a small business. However, this is a mistake. A common mistake perhaps, but a mistake none the less.
You see, almost everything a big business does, you can do too. You just have to be more creative in your execution and scale appropriately.
Most of us have no money to fund marketing initiatives in the beginning and SMARTSTART was no exception. Along with most community members, I first rely on the many free options, like buzz marketing, available to master. 😉
For example, SMARTSTART BUSINESS was launched using a model very similar to that of American Idol (but without the giant-sized budget). Its predecessor, SMARTSTART GIVING, was launched using ideas like Ben & Jerry’s. Our original program, SMARTSTART CAREER, combined elements from both the remarkable and the secrets examples.
More next time. Until then, remember to LOVE YOUR WORK, whatever it may be.
